Why metrompg.com?

Posted Tuesday, September 6/05 in General

I've been interested in fuel-efficiency for some time. It all started when I was training to become a driving instructor - a job I did part-time while in university. As part of our training, we had to research and present a seminar to our fellow trainees, and I chose the topic of economy driving. It's been a bee in my bonnet ever since.

This spring when it came time to replace my 16 year old Honda Accord, I finally decided to put my money where my interests were and try one of the Suzuki clones.

For years, these cars were the reigning champions of the Canadian government's annual fuel economy rankings. But my curiosity about them was exceeded by my wariness about their, uh, minimalism.

My main reservations: Were they any good? Could they actually deliver the gas mileage claimed in the ratings? Could I live with a 1.0L, three cylinder engine? And most importantly, could I handle the stigma of owning a Geo Metro???

I turned to the Internet to find answers to these important questions... and was disappointed. I didn't really find what I was looking for.

Therefore, today I launched this web site - an outlet for my fascination with fuel efficiency, and hopefully a font of knowledge for you, the aspiring fuel efficient masses.

Next post: I review the car I bought - a 1998 Pontiac Firefly.
